你知道“气质”要怎么翻译成英文吗？

之前看到有这样的翻译

形容一个人很有品味还可以说
You have a good taste!

▌形容一个人有气质，可以用elegance和class，elegance强调有高雅、典雅，class强调有格调、有品位，也可以用这两个词的形容词：elegant和classy。

“disposition”（性情），
“character”（个性），
“nature”（本性）
"air"（气氛）
......

这些词都可以在特定语境下形容“气质”。

❤如果形容一位女士有格调、有品位，可以用“class”：

女孩子“有气质”也可以说: a girl with class. 请见如下：

1. I like a girl with class, smiles, and the mutual appreciation of adventure, health, and the finer things in life.
(我喜欢有气质的女孩，有笑容，以及彼此都能欣赏冒险、健康及生活中的美好事物。)

2. His Ideal Lady: "I like a girl with class. You know what I mean, she would choose TC over IHOP anyday. She should also be straightforward about how she feels....
(他理想中的女人：我喜欢有气质的女孩，你知道我的意思，任何时候她都会选择上馆子而不是吃路边摊。)

❤如果形容一个人有魅力、有吸引人的特质，也可以用“charisma”：领袖气质、领袖魅力可以说charisma；明星受欢迎、有人气也叫charisma

如：Some politicians have charisma, others do not.有些政治人物有领袖气质，有些则无。

Eminem has charisma, Detroit has character.阿姆有人气，底特律有个性


❤如果要描述一个人性格、个性方面的气质特点， 跟个性有关的气质英文可以用temperament, air, aura, disposition等

❤跟个性有关的气质英文叫"temperament", 如“性格与气质”可以说: character and temperament，如：

1. His inner character and temperament show that he is not warlike by nature nor do they suggest that he desires the status of a mighty imperial ruler.

(他内在的性格与气质显示本质上他不好战，也看不出他想成为武功显赫君主。)

2. It is a person's character and temperament that matters (more so than ability and relative intelligence) .

❤如果是形容一个人的气场、特质，英文中有一个词“aura”，

这个词的英文解释是：

"Aura" is the ever-changing flow of life energy around one's body.

指整个人的气场、精气神，有点像中文里的“气”。


1. Rei is one of my ideal role models of beauty. She has an aura of elegance and mystery about her.
( 瑞，是我心仪的美女典范，有气质美与神秘感。)

2. Prettiest female skater under 18 I picked Ann Patrice because she has an aura of elegance about her and when she smiles her whole face seems to light up. ..

❤形容女性的时尚高贵，或所谓的“上流美”，可以说chic

如：It's chic. It has the "I roll around in money" signature.（这件衣服）很有高贵气质 ，散发“我在钱堆里打滚”的气味。

It's chic and it's stylish, a retro heart warmer filled with likable characters ...这地方很有气质，又有格调，复古温馨，到处都是气味相投的人。

It's chic and upscale and fits perfectly with the mall's image. ....
(很有气质、很高档，非常适合这个购物中心的形象。)

“气质”、“肉麻”之类的抽象名词、形容词等不像苹果、西瓜、马克杯等具象名词，比较难在英文里找到完全的对应词(equivalent)，但在翻译时如能依语境（context）所提供的信息来寻找英文在同样环境下对应的表达法，也可以找到相当接近的说法。

►She had an aura of authority.
她给人一种很有权威的气场。

其实，”气质“这个词在英文中并没有一个与其完全对应的词汇。

2008年，台湾一位英语教授蘇席瑤在Journal of Sociolinguistics上发表了一篇文章《What does it mean to be a girl with qizhi? - Refinement, gender and language ideologies in contemporary Taiwan》

作者对“气质”一词做了如下英文解释。

The interviews consistently and systematically revealed the use of a term, qizhi – roughly equivalent to ‘refined disposition.’ qizhi is often used to describe, evaluate, and further regulate women's ways of speaking, although its use is not gender exclusive.

🌷至于“有钱没气质”可以说: have lots of money but lack class，请见下例：

There was a time when a 5-star hotel was an acceptable substitute for a home away from home, and a meeting place for people having class, sophistication and culture. Instead today, these bastions of luxury are swamped by hordes who have an abundance of money but lack class.

(曾经有一度五星级饭店被我们当作是另一个家，是有品味、有涵养的人士聚会的地方。而如今这些豪华的场所则充斥着一大批有钱没气质的家伙。)

❤在做中翻英时，“气质”不必完全翻译出来，可以结合语境选择适合的词，只要能表达出意思即可

例如，以下两例中“气质”的翻译被虚化了：

她有一种与生俱来的高贵气质。She holds a built-in elegance/nobleness。

她这个人看上去一点气质都没有。She looks so vulgar.

也可不用虚化处理。比如：

他虽然衣衫褴褛，但却有种潇洒从容的气质。Despite his shabbyness, he wears a free and unrestrained air.
